Standing Beef Rib Roast with Red Wine Jus, and Edinburgh, a fairytale city

Standing beef rib roast, Mama Ía blogWhat could be more appropriate than a roast recipe to accompany a post about the UK? Rosemary and thyme standing beef rib roast with red wine jus is the recipe and Edinburgh, Scotland, the destination!

In the last post, I covered a lot of what we did in London, but it got a bit long before I could even start to tell you about Edinburgh. And Edinburgh deserved the attention! That’s why I am keeping my word and sharing some photos and stories of this historic, fairytale city, the capital of Scotland. If you have visited it, you know what I’m talking about.

Yule Log, Tronco de Navidad, for Christmas —and a celebratory London trip

Yule log, tronco de Navidad, Mama Ía blogThanksgiving came late this year, so as I kept basting the turkey every thirty minutes, I was already thinking of recipes for Christmas. With the aroma of the bird roasting in the oven, football on TV as the background sound and the sight of two of my children relaxing on the sofa —a heavenly picture, given that they had not been home since the summer—, my mind kept going back to …yule log!

Strolling through Portobello Market, Notting Hill

For many years, I bought our Christmas yule log at the bakery, and it was good. But last year I decided to tackle it myself. It looked like a huge task, but I faced it in chunks to make it seem easier. I took the cake recipe from one (more…)

Octopus with Potatoes, the Unexpected Guest at our Christmas Table

Octopus with potatoes, Mama ía blogThe anticipation of Christmas break is always special, no matter what one’s age. As a child, it was a magical time in every sense —the miracle of the birth, the visit of the Three Magi, loaded with toys, and the school vacation! As an adult, the excitement doesn’t wane, but new layers are added: this year was the first one we had two of our children away at college, and therefore back home for Christmas. What better opportunity than to celebrate with special dishes they don’t usually eat?

Roast Turkey with Sherry Gravy, Happy Thanksgiving!

Roast turkey, Mama ía blogWe are talking turkey today. I know, not a very typical Spanish dish. But like many others I have been cooking for years, this one had to be on the blog, because even though we don’t celebrate Thanksgiving in Spain, we do celebrate Christmas. And I have been eating turkey for Christmas since middle school. Seriously!

Spanish Nougat Mousse, Mousse de Turrón —or the Spanish habit of conservation

Spanish nougat mousse, Mousse de Turrón, Mama ÍaIt happens every year around Christmas time: I buy too much turrón, Spanish nougat. And every year I tell myself that next year I won’t buy as much, but invariably, I do it again. Not that I don’t buy many other Christmas sweets, and make them, too, of course. But turrón is closest to my heart. I talked about Christmas nostalgia in other (more…)
